Champions League Round of 16: Borussia Dortmund – PSV

Both teams were happy to have drawn the other side when hearing the last 16 ties announced. PSV would have felt to have drawn one of the weaker group winners(despite the tough group Dortmund were handed) whereas Dortmund would have felt that the Dutch side, despite impressing in the Dutch league, are definitely winnable opposition. After a 1-1 draw in the first game in Eindhoven, there is still all to play for this wednesday.

Borussia Dortmund Team News

Dortmund do not have too many injuries at the moment, with only Sebastian Haller and Bamba out of the game. However, the suspension of Schlotterbeck will be less happily received by the Germans. Still, key players all are available for Terzic´s side, giving them confidence to advance through to the next round.

PSV Team News

The Dutch league leaders have been dealt an injury blow with the confirmation that midfielder Ismail Saibari is missing the game due to injury. The Moroccan midfielder has been a great asset to Peter Bosz with his dynamic play and strength in the midfield. However PSV will be happy that key player Joey Veerman will be available for the game after having missed a few Eredivisie games in a row. Long term injured Noa Lang is still out for the game after having missed quite a significant part of the season already.

Borussia Dortmund Form

Dortmund have a bit of an inconsistent season at the moment, their Champions League campaign has been outstanding, finishing top in the group of death with PSG, AC Milan and Newcastle. However, in the league they are just placed at 4th, behind Stuttgart, Bayern and Leverkusen. In the League their form is also quite wobbly, having won the last 2 games coming after a defeat at home against Hoffenheim. It will be difficult to predict which Dortmund will show up.

PSV Form

PSV are clear favourites to win the league in the Netherlands, 10 points ahead of 2nd placed Feyenoord. The Eindhovenaren are still unbeaten in the league this season but are less untouchable than they were in 2024 than they were in the second half of 2023. They have lost to Feyenoord in the cup and have drawn 3 games already in 2024 in the league, after winning all 17 in the first half of 2023/24 season.

What do the stats say?

  • In only 3 matches this season has PSV conceded more than 1 goal.
  • Dortmund have kept 5 clean sheets in their last 10 matches
  • Dortmund only conceded 5 goals in their 7 champions league matches this season, with 2 of those coming in the first match.

Our verdict

Both teams, while playing attacking football have been quite stable at the back as well. Especially in the Champions League where pragmatism often beats attacking intent. Such as the first game was a tight affair with not too many chances we expect a similar game today. PSV will try to go out and attack for sure but will be very cautious when doing so to prevent giving Dortmund´s attack too much space.

Bet: Under 3.5 goals
